School Help for Students Without Stable Housing in Schuylkill Valley
Schuylkill Valley School District has a homeless liaison who helps students going through housing problems get into school and stay there under the federal McKinney-Vento Act. The Pennsylvania Education for Children and Youth Experiencing Homelessness program offers services to assist students during this time.
You may qualify if you are living in a shelter, in a motel or campground because there is no other adequate accommodation, in a car, park, abandoned building, bus or train station, or doubled up with other people because of loss of housing or economic hardship.
Eligible students have the right to a free, appropriate public education, to enroll in school immediately even if they lack documents normally required for enrollment, and to attend classes while the school gathers those documents. You can enroll in the local school or keep attending the school of origin, meaning the school attended when permanently housed or the school in which the student was last enrolled, if that is your preference and is feasible. If the district believes the school selected is not in your best interest, it will give you a written explanation of its position and inform you of your right to appeal the decision. Transportation to and from the school of origin is provided at your request, and students receive educational services comparable to those provided to other students, according to their needs.
