Help for Students Without Stable Housing From Schuylkill Valley School District
Schuylkill Valley School District has a homeless liaison who helps students who are going through housing problems get and stay in school under the federal McKinney-Vento Act. You may qualify if you are living in a shelter, in a motel or campground because there is no other adequate housing, in a car, park, abandoned building, bus or train station, or doubled up with other people because of loss of housing or economic hardship. Students who qualify have the right to a free, appropriate public education, to enroll in school immediately even without the documents normally required, and to attend classes while the school gathers those documents.
You can enroll in the local school or keep attending the school of origin, meaning the school attended when permanently housed or the school last enrolled in, if that is your preference and it is feasible. If the district believes the school you chose is not in your best interest, it will give you a written explanation and tell you about your right to appeal. Transportation to and from the school of origin is provided at your request, and students receive educational services comparable to those given to other students, based on their needs.
