Student Assistance Program Support for Schuylkill Valley Students and Families
The Schuylkill Valley School District runs a Student Assistance Program, known as SAP, that identifies students who are having behavior or academic difficulties that stand in the way of their learning and success in school, and offers support to those students and their families. Team members have specialized training from Commonwealth of Pennsylvania-approved SAP training providers along with other related continuing education.
It is for students in the district's schools who show observable needs in academics, behavior, attendance, or mental health. Taking part is voluntary, and the process is confidential.
Anyone who has seen student behaviors that may be a barrier to learning can make a referral: school staff, students, family members, community members, and students themselves. Examples the district lists include academic decline, attendance concerns, a change in friends, decreased attention span, disciplinary problems, a drop in motivation, dangerous behaviors, sadness or mood swings, expressions of hopelessness, fatigue and listlessness, isolation, loss of interest in school or activities, openly admitting alcohol, tobacco, or drug use, odor of alcohol or marijuana, glassy or bloodshot eyes, a noticeable change in weight, frequent visits to the school nurse or guidance office, poor hygiene, and self-injury or abuse.
To make a referral, contact the student's school and ask to speak to the school counselor or another member of the SAP team about your concern.
After a referral, the SAP team gathers observable information about the student's performance and behavior from teachers, counselors, nurses, administrators, and other staff as needed. A team member then notifies the parent or guardian and asks permission to go forward; parent or guardian notification, involvement, and contact are required for the process to work. Once consent is given, the team develops strategies to support the student. This can include school and community resources, and the team continues contact and support to help students and parents keep successful interventions going. The SAP team meets weekly to discuss pending referrals and assign new ones.

SAP teams are in place at the high school, middle school, and elementary school, and the individual team members are named for each building.
