Free Breakfast and Reduced Price Lunch From Tulpehocken Area School District
Tulpehocken Area School District serves breakfast free of charge at all of its schools and lets families apply for free or reduced price lunch for their children. For the 2026-2027 school year, breakfast is free at all schools, elementary lunch costs $2.65 and middle school and high school lunch costs $2.90.
Families can apply for free and reduced price meals online through SchoolCafe, which the district describes as faster and easier than a paper application, or use a paper application. The 2026-2027 paper application and its instructions are posted in both English and Spanish, along with a household letter and a food services newsletter that answer the most common questions. Online applications go electronically and directly to the school district for processing. The page does not list the income limits or other rules for who qualifies, so ask the district.
Money can be added to a child's cafeteria account through SchoolCafe, or by sending cash or a check made out to Tulpehocken Area School District into your child's school in an envelope with the child's name and ID number.
No student who asks for a meal will be denied a main lunch option unless a parent or guardian has given written permission to withhold a school lunch. If a student picks a meal without positive funds or cash, the student gets the meal without discussion and it is charged to the lunch account. A la carte items such as snacks and ice cream cannot be charged. Students in grades K-6 with a negative balance and cash in hand may still make purchases; students in grades 7-12 will be asked to put the cash toward the negative balance. Notices go out weekly by email, letter and/or automated phone call when a balance falls below $0.00, and accounts the district cannot collect on are sent to a collection agency, which adds fees. Communications about money owed go to the parent or guardian only.
If a child cannot eat school meals because of a disability that restricts their diet, the food service department is required to make accommodations. A recognized medical authority must complete and sign the Medical Plan of Care, which is returned to Jillian Bergman, Director of Food Services. Someone from the food service department will then contact you to confirm the form arrived and discuss how accommodations will be made.

An account balance refund can be requested by email to the Director of Food Services. Accounts of students who have left the district with $5.00 or less are donated to the Food Service Delinquent Fund. A senior's leftover balance transfers to a sibling in another grade; with no siblings, a balance under $5.00 is donated to pay down other students' delinquent accounts, and a balance over $5.00 is refunded.
