WIC Food Benefits for Pregnant Women and Young Children From MFHS
Maternal and Family Health Services runs the WIC Nutrition Program, which helps families buy healthy groceries and gives them nutrition support during pregnancy and while their children are small. WIC is there every step of the way, starting with pregnancy and through a child's 5th birthday.
WIC is for pregnant, postpartum and nursing individuals and families with children under 5 years old. Many working families qualify. Step-parents, foster parents, grandparents and guardians are also among the people WIC is for. The income rules are not stated, so ask when you call.
Qualifying families can receive over $1000 a year in support. The benefit amounts are $96 to $99 for a child, $126 to $250 for women, and $145 to $300 for infants, and that infant range can vary depending on the exact food packages received. Women can get up to $47 per month just in fruits and vegetables, $52 if they are breastfeeding, and $78 if they are breastfeeding multiples. Pregnant and postpartum women, infants who are 6 months and up, and children also receive Farmer's Market Nutrition Vouchers valued at $20 per participant. Along with the food benefits, WIC includes access to a free nutritionist, tips for healthy meals, and pregnancy and breastfeeding support.

MFHS provides WIC services through a network of WIC Nutrition Centers in 17 Pennsylvania counties, and its service areas include Reading and Greater Berks County. The address and hours of the Berks County center are not published, so ask for them when you call or look them up under Locations at mfhs.org.
