Family Primary and Preventive Care From Berks Community Health Center
Berks Community Health Center offers your entire family primary and preventive health care services, from newborn visits through care for senior citizens. Your primary care provider and their whole medical team get to know you and are your first and main point of contact for all continuing care. This day-to-day care is given by board-certified family physicians or nurse practitioners and includes diagnosis and treatment of acute and chronic illnesses, health promotion and education, disease prevention, health maintenance, counseling, and coordination with specialists. Disease prevention, including vaccinations and screenings, is a large part of the work.
For children, BCHC is your child's medical home both for when they are sick and well, from infancy through adolescence. That includes newborn visits, well child checks, vaccinations and immunizations, same day sick visits, care for injuries and infections, and physicals for school, camp, sports and the driver's test. A baby's first visit is scheduled about one to two days after hospital discharge. Often the hospital care team will call BCHC to make that appointment; if not, you can call to schedule the first visit, and newborns are seen promptly.
For adults of all ages, young adults through senior citizens, the health center offers preventive health and wellness, care of chronic medical problems, work, driver's and other physicals, follow-up care after hospitalization and emergency room visits, same day appointments for sick visits, walk-in evening hours for "quick sick" visits for BCHC patients, Welcome to Medicare visits, annual physicals including annual Medicare wellness visits, catch-up immunizations for adults, flu shots, women's health care, dental care, and specialty care at the health center for podiatry, chiropractic care and optometry.
Women's health services include gynecological care with annual exams and cancer screening, reproductive health, birth control prescriptions and family planning, and care for issues that come up as women age.
Free pregnancy testing is available at all of the health center locations. There is no need to make an appointment, and you do not have to be a BCHC patient. You may simply walk in and request a free pregnancy test at the front desk, and staff will take care of you. If you are pregnant, BCHC will refer you for early prenatal care.
BCHC accepts all forms of insurance, including CHIP and Medicaid, and offers a sliding fee discount program for people, with or without insurance, who have income at or below 200% of the Federal Poverty Level. The page does not list what the discounted visit costs, so ask when you call.
To start care, call 610-988-4838 for an appointment at one of the four locations. BCHC at Penn Street, BCHC at Rockland and BCHC at Oakbrook are each open Monday through Friday, 8 AM to 6 PM. The page names four locations but lists hours for these three, and it does not give street addresses, so ask which site is closest to you. When BCHC is closed, you can always reach an on-call BCHC provider after hours.
One thing to know: Berks Community Health Center has entered into an agreement to join Union Community Care, another community health center. If you are already a patient or are becoming one, ask what that means for your care.
