Shelter for Families With Children From Family Promise of Berks County
Family Promise of Berks County runs the Hospitality Network, a 90-day shelter program that gives families with children who are experiencing homelessness a safe place to stay, meals, and case management. Families are kept together no matter their composition, including single parents, couples with children, multigenerational families and LGBTQ+ families, and each family gets private sleeping quarters in a home-like setting.
To qualify, your family must be currently experiencing homelessness, have lived in Berks County for at least 90 days, and include at least one child under the age of 18 in your legal custody. You also must have no recent history of violent crimes or child abuse, commit to a drug- and alcohol-free lifestyle, be actively seeking work or pursuing education, and be willing to follow the program rules and guidelines.
While you are in the program you get private sleeping quarters for each family, use of laundry, kitchen and shower facilities, a secure mailing address, hygiene products and food distribution. Volunteers from local congregations prepare Monday meals, and volunteers also provide weekly warm meals and supplemental groceries. A case manager works with you on a plan for housing, employment and self-sufficiency, using trauma-informed case management, advocacy, mediation and goal setting. The program also offers help finding and keeping a job, financial literacy and education programs, support securing permanent housing, and referrals to partner organizations. After the 90 days, the goal is to move into permanent housing, and case managers keep providing support services to help you stay stable.
There is also the Bridge House, where one family can stay up to six months. Guests at the Bridge House pay a client contribution based on a sliding fee scale.
There is no cost to families in the Hospitality Network itself. The program is paid for through community donations and grants.
