Emergency Shelter in Reading From Opportunity House

Opportunity House runs a year-round emergency shelter at 430 North Second Street in Reading for men, women, children, and veterans who are experiencing homelessness.

The Reading shelter is open 24 hours a day, seven days a week. Each year it serves approximately 500 men, women, and children who need a safe place to stay.

Along with a safe place to sleep, residents get case management and supportive services meant to help them move toward permanent, stable housing. Clients meet regularly with case managers to set goals and create housing plans. Through the S.M.I.L.E. program, residents build essential life skills such as job interviewing, budgeting, hygiene, and meal preparation.

The page does not say what the shelter costs, whether there is a waiting list, what to bring, or whether anyone can be taken in by coming to the door without calling first, so ask those questions when you call.

Opportunity House also runs a separate emergency shelter in Pottstown, at the Days Inn. People seeking that shelter are told to call Your Way Home at 610-510-4358, and walk-ins cannot be accepted there.
