Free Legal Help With Eviction and Housing Problems From MidPenn Legal Services
MidPenn Legal Services is a non-profit, public interest law firm that takes civil housing cases, including eviction, habitability, mortgage foreclosure, tenant's rights and public housing. It also handles other civil matters such as consumer cases, custody, protection orders, employment and public benefits.
MidPenn provides free civil legal services to low-income residents and survivors of domestic violence and sexual assault in 18 counties in Central Pennsylvania, and Berks County is one of them. Its services are free to eligible individuals in civil cases. The page does not print an income limit or spell out who counts as eligible, so ask when you call.
To ask for help, call 1-800-326-9177 or apply online at apply.midpenn.org. The intake unit is open from 8:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. The same number, (800)326-9177, is the help line for Adams, Bedford, Berks, Blair, Centre, Clearfield, Cumberland, Dauphin, Franklin, Fulton, Huntingdon, Juniata, Lancaster, Lebanon, Mifflin, Perry, Schuylkill and York Counties.
Survivors of domestic and sexual violence can also get housing help through MidPenn's Legal Intervention for Victims and Empowerment (LIVE) project, funded by grants from the PA Commission on Crime and Delinquency, which offers additional free legal representation in protection orders, family law, housing and expungement. The LIVE project operates in Berks, Blair, Clearfield, Franklin, Fulton, Huntingdon, Lancaster, Lebanon and Schuylkill Counties.
MidPenn's administrative offices are at 100 North Cameron Street, Suite 401 West, Harrisburg, PA 17101, and the administration phone is (717)234-0492, which is a general contact for the organization rather than an intake line. No Berks County office address is listed, and the page does not say whether you can walk in or what documents to bring, so ask when you call.
