BARTA Special Services Shared Ride at Full Fare in Berks County
BARTA operates a door-to-door shared ride service called BARTA Special Services for senior citizens and people with disabilities in Berks County, and any member of the general public may use it at full fare. Rides are grouped, so you share the vehicle with other riders whose trips have similar times and locations. It is not a taxi, not a non-stop ride for one person, and it does not provide emergency transportation.
Service covers Berks County. Rides are also provided in Montgomery County for residents within 10 miles of Berks County going to the Boyertown Multi-Service Senior Center, if a vehicle is available. Several funding programs for seniors, people with disabilities and other special needs populations can cover most or all of the cost for riders who qualify; each program has its own rules. Everyone else pays the full fare.
Full fares are based on how far you travel and are effective as of August 1, 2026:
- 0 miles to 1.99 miles: $17.50
- 2 miles to 3.99 miles: $22.50
- 4 miles to 5.99 miles: $27.50
- 6 miles to 9.99 miles: $38.50
- 10 miles to 15.99 miles: $48.00
- More than 16.0 miles: $56.00
- Out of county, 10 miles outside the county line: $60.00
The same fare table lists much lower amounts for riders in the subsidized programs: a 15% co-pay and PWD co-pays running from $2.65 to $9.00 by distance, and an ADA co-pay of $3.60. Personal care attendants ride at no charge. Companions and escorts pay the full fare.
BARTA requires an application from anyone who wants to use the service. Once you are set up, the reservation process requires two working days' notice to schedule most appointments. People who qualify for transportation under the Americans with Disabilities Act are entitled to next-day service.
You can pay your fare with the BARTA Go Mobile app, a reloadable BARTA Go Mobile card, or cash.
Rides are provided by BARTA and Easton Coach Co. For questions about Special Services, including how to get an application and how to book, call 610-921-2361.
