Home Weatherization for Lower Income Households in Berks County
Pennsylvania's Weatherization Assistance Program, run by the Department of Community and Economic Development, makes homes more energy efficient so they cost less to heat and cool, are more comfortable and are safer to live in. The program serves low-income individuals, meaning households at or below 200% of the federal poverty level. Priority goes to higher risk residents such as the elderly, disabled individuals, families with children and high energy users.
The work starts with an on site energy audit that looks at conditions in the home and identifies the most cost-effective energy saving measures to install. Depending on what the audit finds, services can include:
- Blower door guided air sealing to find and reduce air leakage throughout the home
- Attic, wall, basement and crawlspace insulation and ventilation to reduce energy loss
- Heating system modification or replacement to improve efficiency and safety
- Minor repairs and health and safety measures when they are needed so the weatherization work can be installed safely
- Client education on how to use and maintain the installed measures and how to cut down energy waste every day
