About the class
This Alvernia University Seniors College workshop looks at why productive conversation across differences has become so hard, and what can be done about it. After a short overview of how we got here, the group considers how polarization, misinformation, moral conviction and distrust of institutions shape the way people respond to opposing views.
Much of the time is hands on. Participants try out evidence-based approaches for lowering defensiveness and opening room for compromise, then practice them in small-group exercises on listening, perspective-taking, disagreeing well and democratic dialogue. Expect to talk and work with others rather than just sit and listen. The presenter is Nicholas Nicoletti, Ph.D., Director of the Ph.D. in Leadership program at Alvernia.
Sessions run Tuesday afternoons from 1 PM to 3:30 PM at the McGlinn Conference Center, 460 Saint Bernardine Street in Reading. The course is part of the Seniors College program for older adults.
