The Cheesesteak Roll

This unique menu item generates exceptional enthusiasm from a Philadelphia native who specifically craves it, describing it as "perfection" and a must-have that sets this restaurant apart from competitors.

So when I came across a cheese steak roll, I had to have it!! They were divine!! The juicy-melty-cheesy roll with the deep-fried crunch was perfection!
They seem to be the only Chinese restaurant in the immediate area that offers them. They are must have!!

Customer experiences with food quality vary dramatically—some praise fresh, flavorful dishes while others report spoiled-tasting meat, undercooked rice, and food that made them ill.

Food was great. Service was fast, friendly and respectful. The shrimp fried rice with boneless ribs was amazing.
The food is disgusting. Everyone please read the reviews before you go here. This is the second time we order the fried chicken from here and my husband got sick.

About Family Garden

Overview

Family Garden is a Chinese restaurant located at 1701 Perkiomen Avenue in Reading, Pennsylvania. The establishment operates as a counter-service restaurant serving American-Chinese cuisine, with a menu that spans traditional favorites alongside some regional adaptations. The restaurant serves the Reading community with dine-in, takeout, and delivery options, functioning as a neighborhood establishment that caters to both quick meals and family dining occasions.

Location and Accessibility

The restaurant occupies a location along Perkiomen Avenue, one of Reading's main commercial corridors. Free street parking is available for customers, making it accessible for those arriving by car. The facility includes wheelchair accessible features, with both an accessible entrance and accessible parking areas, accommodating guests with mobility considerations.

The physical space maintains a casual atmosphere suited to the counter-service model. Customers order at the counter and can choose to dine in the restaurant or take their food to go. The environment is described as quiet, making it appropriate for various dining situations including solo meals, family outings, and quick lunch breaks.

Menu and Cuisine

Family Garden's menu follows the American-Chinese restaurant tradition, offering combination platters, individual entrees, and appetizers. The restaurant prepares standard dishes found throughout the genre, including General Tso's chicken, sesame chicken, beef and broccoli, and various fried rice preparations. Shrimp fried rice with boneless ribs represents one of the combination options available to customers.

The menu extends beyond typical Chinese restaurant fare to include some distinctive items. Notably, the restaurant offers cheesesteak rolls, a fusion item that combines Philadelphia cheesesteak ingredients with Chinese-style egg roll preparation. This item reflects the restaurant's location in eastern Pennsylvania, where cheesesteak culture from nearby Philadelphia influences local food preferences. The presence of such items on the menu indicates an adaptation to regional tastes that distinguishes Family Garden from more standardized Chinese restaurant operations.

Vegetarian options are available for customers seeking meat-free meals, and the restaurant offers what it categorizes as healthy options within its menu structure. Small plates and appetizers provide alternatives to full entree portions, with crab rangoon being among the appetizer selections. The boneless ribs preparation has developed a following among regular customers who note the tender texture of this particular dish.

The restaurant accommodates various dietary preferences and eating occasions. Quick bite options serve customers seeking faster meals, while comfort food dishes satisfy those looking for more substantial fare. Late-night food service extends the restaurant's operating hours beyond typical dinner service, providing options for customers with evening schedules.

Service Model and Operations

Family Garden operates primarily as a counter-service establishment, though reservations are accepted for customers who wish to plan their visits in advance. The restaurant processes orders at the counter, with staff taking orders and preparing food in the kitchen. This model allows for efficient service during busy periods while maintaining the ability to customize orders to customer specifications.

Payment options include credit cards, debit cards, and NFC mobile payments, providing flexibility for customers in how they complete transactions. The acceptance of contactless payment methods reflects modern payment preferences and adds convenience for customers who prefer digital payment options.

Delivery service extends the restaurant's reach beyond its physical location. Customers can order food for delivery to their homes or workplaces, expanding the restaurant's service area throughout the Reading community. Takeout service remains a significant portion of the business, with many customers ordering food to bring home rather than dining in the restaurant.

Customer Base and Dining Occasions

The restaurant serves a diverse customer base that includes families, solo diners, and groups seeking casual meals. The family-friendly environment welcomes children, and the casual atmosphere removes formality that might make family dining more challenging. Solo dining is common at the establishment, with the counter-service model and quiet atmosphere accommodating individual customers comfortably.

Lunch and dinner represent the primary meal periods for Family Garden's business. The combination platters and quick service options make the restaurant suitable for lunch breaks when time constraints matter. Dinner service draws customers seeking more leisurely meals or takeout options for home consumption.

The restaurant has developed a base of repeat customers who return regularly for specific dishes or the overall value proposition. Combination platters are noted for generous portion sizes, providing substantial amounts of food relative to pricing. This value orientation appeals to budget-conscious diners and families seeking to feed multiple people without excessive expense.

Staff and Service

Family Garden employs a staff that handles counter service, phone orders, and food preparation. The restaurant takes phone orders for pickup and delivery, requiring staff to communicate effectively with customers calling in their requests. Some staff members have developed reputations among regular customers for their helpfulness and menu knowledge, assisting customers in navigating the menu and making selections.

The restaurant employs workers across different age groups, including younger staff members who handle customer-facing responsibilities. Training in customer service and order processing enables staff to manage the various service channels the restaurant maintains, from in-person counter orders to phone-in requests.

Practical Information

Family Garden can be reached by phone at +1 610-736-0330 for orders, inquiries, or reservations. The restaurant's location at 1701 Perkiomen Avenue places it within the Reading city limits, accessible from various neighborhoods throughout the area.
