The Best Chinese Food in Berks County and Reading PA
A county-wide guide to Chinese restaurants in Reading and across Berks County, from downtown takeout counters to the vegan kitchen in West Reading.

Ask for Chinese food in Reading, PA and you are really asking one of four questions: where is the takeout counter near me, where is the room I can sit down in, where is the vegan one, and where is the one that also does sushi. Berks County answers all four. Here is the county-wide version, from a downtown Reading counter out to Bally, Topton and Kutztown.
- Fortune Cafe: the Wyomissing counter reviewers name for General Tso and sesame chicken.
- Great Wall Chinese Restaurant: the West Reading takeout stop for crab rangoon.
- No.1 Chinese Restaurant: coconut chicken, wings and a Thai section at Kenhorst Plaza.
- Zhuang's Garden: the West Lawn sit-down room with all-you-can-eat sushi at lunch.
- Mikura: the Wyomissing kitchen for Korean fried chicken and specialty rolls.
- Chen VegetarianHouse: the vegan Chinese kitchen, in West Reading.
- Golden Bowl Restaurant: the downtown Reading counter whose platters run in Spanish.
- Chan's: the cash-only pork fried rice counter on South Fourth Street in Reading.
- Nice Garden: boneless spare ribs in Blandon.
- China Hut: steamed pork dumplings and bubble tea in Fleetwood.
How we picked these Berks County Chinese restaurants.
We read the reviewer text our directory holds for Berks Chinese kitchens and pulled out the dishes people named by name. Where a restaurant publishes its own site, we went there to confirm hours, cuisine and menu sections, and where a kitchen had no reviewer text we made no claim about how the food tastes. Nothing here is ranked, and nobody paid to be in it.
The Reading Eagle Readers' Choice Chinese vote.
The county votes on this too. The Reading Eagle's Readers' Choice ballot carries a Chinese category, and it dates its voting August 16 to August 31, 2026, with results on Sunday, October 11, 2026.
Fortune Cafe. The Wyomissing counter for General Tso and sesame chicken.
Fortune Cafe is a small counter operation on Berkshire Boulevard in Wyomissing, and the order is the General Tso combo. Reviewers also name the sesame chicken. One of them: "Best sesame chicken I've ever had ... Unbelievable delicious."
The appetizer end of the menu is where it separates itself. Reviewers single out the crab rangoon and the egg rolls, one noting the egg rolls are "always crunchy and not greasy!"
Its printed menu also carries fried sugar donuts, a Bo Bo tray and a cold noodle with sesame sauce. One reviewer ordered takeout and had it in fifteen minutes. For more of what is worth eating on that side of the county, we have a separate roundup of restaurants in Wyomissing.
Great Wall Chinese Restaurant. Crab rangoon on Penn Avenue in West Reading.
Great Wall sits on the Penn Avenue strip in West Reading, and the crab rangoon is what its reviewers name. One puts it this way: "Crab Rangoon to die for. Every time we order we can expect the same perfection."
Past the appetizers, one reviewer's standing order is the garlic shrimp, egg rolls, steamed dumplings and lo mein. Another did the lunch special, which "came with an egg roll unless you wanted something else."
Reviewers also come back to the value. One calls it "pretty affordable" with portion sizes that "are great," which is the whole point of a Penn Avenue takeout stop on a Tuesday.
No.1 Chinese Restaurant. Coconut chicken and a Thai section at Kenhorst Plaza.
No.1 sits in Kenhorst Plaza, and the thing to order is the coconut chicken. It appears three separate times on the menu, as a lunch special, a combo plate and a chef's specialty, and reviewers single it out: "Coconut Chicken is by far now my top favorite Chinese food. Amazing!"
The menu runs long and it does not stop at Chinese. There is a Thai section with pad thai, a red curry chicken and a Thai seafood fried rice, plus a wings section labeled fresh fry only.
Reviewers name the shrimp fried rice too. One drives three hours back into the area and stops for "wings, shrimp fried rice and some chicken broccoli." Reviewers also like the online ordering, one of them for being able to "order online and track my order."
Zhuang's Garden. Sushi, a koi pond, and an all-you-can-eat lunch in West Lawn.
Zhuang's Garden on Penn Avenue in West Lawn is the sit-down room of this group, and its reviewers lead with the sushi. "Best sushi I've ever had in PA. Super yummy and fresh," one wrote. There is an all-you-can-eat sushi lunch, and reviewers rate it: "All you can eat sushi for lunch!! Great sushi at that!"
The Chinese menu sits behind the sushi bar, and one reviewer rates both sides in a single line: "Some of the best sushi and Chinese food, not just in Reading, but anywhere in Southeastern Pennsylvania!"
Two more things. There is a boba bar, which reviewers call out on its own, and there is an indoor koi pond that one reviewer's son got to feed. If the all-you-can-eat part is what caught your eye, we went deeper on that in our guide to all-you-can-eat sushi in Berks County.
Mikura. Korean fried chicken and a sushi taco in Wyomissing.
Mikura on North Park Road in Wyomissing is the one that makes you choose, and you should not. Its lunch menu has a Chinese bowl section running from sesame chicken and pepper steak with onions to a Thai basil and chile, and its sushi bar is turning out things like a sushi taco. "Sushi Taco was AMAZING!!!" one reviewer wrote.
The other order is the Korean fried chicken. Reviewers name it, one for the sweet-and-spicy angle: "Must try their Korean fried chicken. The swicy flavor is the best."
Reviewers also describe getting rolls built to order, one saying they "created some personalized rolls to my liking and it was the best we have ever tried."
Chen VegetarianHouse. The vegan Chinese kitchen in West Reading.
Chen VegetarianHouse on Penn Avenue in West Reading is the vegan answer to this entire question, and it does not treat that as a limitation. Order the General Tso's, which one reviewer says "hit all of the right notes," and the salt and pepper nuggets, which another describes as "more like fried discs of goodness."
The menu goes a long way past mock chicken. Salt and pepper king oyster mushrooms, sugar cane drumsticks, a Malaysian pancake, banana chicken rolls, seaweed salad and a tom yum soup all sit on it.
Reviewers come back to how far the list stretches. "Their menu is large and has vegan versions of stuff like wonton soup that I never see vegan versions for anywhere else," one wrote. Leave room for the vegan cheesecake, which reviewers rate on its own.
Golden Bowl Restaurant. The Penn Street counter with Spanish on the menu.
Golden Bowl stands at 850 Penn Street in downtown Reading, and its menu tells you exactly which block it is on. There is a section called Express Platters, and the platters on it carry Spanish subtitles: Alas Fritas, 1/2 Pollo Frito, Pescado Frito, Grande Camarones Frito, Costillas picada, Pollo Frito Nuggets, Papas Frito.
In English that is fried chicken wings, a fried half chicken, fried whiting, fried jumbo shrimp, spare rib tips, chicken nuggets and French fries. The side you can put next to the fried platters is fried rice, French fries or fried plantain. Fried plantain also stands on its own, and so does a pizza roll (its online ordering menu, read September 1, 2026).
Nobody writes a menu like that by accident. That is a downtown takeout counter cooking for the neighborhood it stands in. If you are working the rest of downtown, our roundup of restaurants in Reading picks up where this leaves off.
Chan's. The cash-only counter on South Fourth Street in Reading.
Chan's is a corner counter on South Fourth Street in Reading, and the order is wings with pork fried rice. One reviewer wrote: "For over 20 years have I been eating here! You must try their 4 Wings Pork Fried Rice!"
The half fried chicken is the other thing reviewers name, one of them saying it "always catches my eye because it looks so good." Portions run large by reviewer account: "they give you very large portion meals!"
One more reviewer, on the whole operation: "It's the best Chinese food in Berks County for sure." Bring cash. Chan's is a cash-only counter, so make the ATM stop on the way there rather than after you order.
China Fun. Hot and sour soup on Pottsville Pike north of Reading.
China Fun sits on Pottsville Pike north of the city, and the hot and sour soup is the tell. Reviewers name it, one of them writing that it was the "First time since I moved to PA that I had hot and sour soup that had flavor."
For the main event, the General Tso's combo. One reviewer orders it by number, combo C22. Another prefers it because "The General's chicken is more tangy than the usual cloying sweetness." Another built a case for the Kung Pao chicken with lo mein, extra spicy, and called it "hands down the best Chinese I've ever had in my life."
This is a long-haul neighborhood kitchen by its reviewers' own accounts. One has been ordering takeout from it since the summer of 2005.
China House on North Fifth Street Highway. A long menu and an app that works.
China House on North Fifth Street Highway runs a menu long enough to need an index, and the part worth knowing about is the Steamed Food Special section: steamed chicken with garlic sauce, steamed four seasons, a steamed seafood combination. A General Tso's bean curd and a cheese steak roll sit on the same menu, which tells you exactly what county you are in.
Reviewers order the sesame chicken. One puts the steamed dumplings alongside it: "Best steamed dumplings... Fried rice and Sesame Chicken!" Another goes for the vegetable lo mein or the General Tso's tofu.
The ordering app comes up in the reviews. One reviewer likes putting the whole order in with "any additions subtractions or slight changes you may want." Another says the food from China House on North Fifth Street Highway arrives hotter than it has any right to, and credits the packaging.
Nice Garden. Boneless spare ribs in Blandon.
Nice Garden on Golden Drive in Blandon changed hands, and its reviewers noticed hard. "New owners have really turned this place around. Super friendly, and timely. The food was amazing," one wrote.
Order the boneless spare ribs. One reviewer's all-caps case for them lands at "ABSOLUTELY the best, and reminds me of Chinese food from NYC or NJ." Reviewers also name the General Tso's combo and the egg rolls, which come out big and crispy by their account.
Then get the sugar donuts. One reviewer ordered the plain lo mein and the donuts and called both "amazing and so hot and fresh," adding that the count came out closer to ten donuts than the five the menu listed.
China Hut. Steamed dumplings and bubble tea in Fleetwood.
China Hut on North Franklin Street in Fleetwood is where you go for the steamed pork dumplings. One reviewer called them "the best steamed pork dumplings we've had in years." Another added the fried pork buns, at "10/10 reccomend!!"
It also runs a proper bubble tea list. One reviewer names the strawberry milk tea; another got specific about the tapioca ratio: "Not too sweet and the right amount of tapioca!"
There is a self-serve station for utensils and sauces, which one reviewer had never seen anywhere else. And one reviewer asked for the General Tso's extra spicy, got it, and reported back: "General Tso was sooooooo good."
Joyful House. Chinese, Japanese and Thai in Douglassville.
Joyful House is in the Douglassville Shopping Center on Old Swede Road, and it declines to pick a lane. Its own site bills it as Japanese, Chinese and Thai with fresh sushi, which is three kitchens' worth of menu in one storefront (site read September 1, 2026).
Two things to know before you drive out there. It is closed Mondays, and it lists pickup, so plan on carrying it home rather than waiting on a driver.
