Just Food For Dogs

Just Food For Dogs operates a retail location within the Petco store at 4607 Perkiomen Avenue in Reading, Pennsylvania. This shop-in-shop concept represents the company's distribution model of partnering with major pet retailers to bring fresh, whole-food dog and cat meals to a broader consumer base. The Reading location serves pet owners in Berks County and surrounding areas who seek alternatives to conventional kibble and canned pet food products.

Company Background and Philosophy

Just Food For Dogs was founded in 2010 in Newport Beach, California, by Shawn Buckley. The company emerged during a period of increasing consumer scrutiny regarding pet food ingredients and manufacturing practices, particularly following the 2007 pet food recalls that affected numerous brands and raised awareness about supply chain transparency in the industry. The founding principle centered on creating pet food using human-grade ingredients prepared in kitchens rather than traditional pet food manufacturing facilities.

The company distinguishes itself through its approach to formulation and production. All recipes are developed in collaboration with veterinary nutritionists to meet the nutritional standards established by the Association of American Feed Control Officials. The meals are cooked in open kitchens, many of which are visible to customers, using ingredients sourced from suppliers that also serve human food establishments. This transparency in preparation represents a departure from conventional pet food manufacturing, where production typically occurs in industrial facilities separate from consumer view.

Products and Menu Options

The Reading location offers the full range of Just Food For Dogs products, which includes fresh refrigerated meals, frozen options, and shelf-stable pantry items. The fresh meal category forms the core of the product line, featuring recipes such as beef and russet potato, chicken and white rice, turkey and whole wheat macaroni, fish and sweet potato, and lamb and brown rice. Each recipe is formulated to serve as complete and balanced nutrition for dogs at various life stages.

For cats, the company produces fresh food options including recipes featuring chicken, fish, and turkey as primary protein sources. The cat food line was developed in response to customer demand and follows the same preparation standards as the canine products.

Beyond the fresh meals, the location stocks several supplementary products. These include nutrient blends that allow pet owners to prepare homemade meals while ensuring nutritional completeness, treats made from single ingredients like beef liver or sweet potato, and bone broth products. The company also offers specialized veterinary support diets formulated for dogs with specific health conditions, though these typically require consultation with a veterinarian.

The product lineup extends to frozen options, which provide longer storage capability for customers who prefer to purchase in larger quantities. The frozen meals maintain the same ingredient quality and nutritional profiles as the fresh refrigerated versions but offer greater flexibility in terms of storage duration and shopping frequency.

Location and Accessibility

The Reading store occupies space within the Petco location on Perkiomen Avenue, a major commercial corridor in the city. This placement within an established pet retailer provides convenient access for customers already shopping for other pet supplies. The location features wheelchair accessible entrances and parking facilities, accommodating visitors with mobility considerations.

Perkiomen Avenue serves as a primary retail and commercial thoroughfare in Reading, with the store situated in an area that includes various shopping destinations and service businesses. The location provides relatively easy access for residents throughout Berks County, including nearby communities such as Wyomissing, Shillington, and Sinking Spring.

Service Options and Ordering

Customers can purchase products through in-store shopping, allowing them to browse the available inventory and receive guidance from staff regarding product selection and feeding recommendations. The location also offers delivery services, providing an option for customers who prefer to receive products at their homes rather than visiting the physical store.

The company maintains an online ordering system, which connects to individual store locations. This allows customers to review product options, pricing, and availability before visiting or to place orders for delivery.

Payment options at the location include both credit and debit cards, providing standard transaction flexibility for customers.

The Fresh Pet Food Category

Just Food For Dogs operates within the fresh pet food segment, a category that has experienced substantial growth within the broader pet industry over the past decade. This market segment emerged as pet owners increasingly applied human food values to their animals' diets, seeking products with recognizable ingredients, minimal processing, and transparent sourcing.

The fresh pet food category differs from conventional pet food in several respects. Traditional dry kibble undergoes extrusion processing at high temperatures, which affects the final form and shelf stability of the product. Fresh foods, by contrast, are typically cooked at lower temperatures and require refrigeration or freezing for preservation. Proponents of fresh feeding argue that this approach better preserves nutritional value and palatability, though the category generally commands higher price points than conventional alternatives.

The shop-in-shop model employed at the Reading location represents one distribution approach within this category. By partnering with established pet retailers like Petco, fresh food brands can reach customers who might not otherwise encounter their products while benefiting from existing retail foot traffic and infrastructure.

Feeding Considerations

Transitioning pets to fresh food diets typically requires a gradual introduction period to allow digestive adjustment. The company provides feeding guidelines based on pet weight, age, and activity level, with staff available to assist customers in determining appropriate portion sizes and meal frequencies.

Storage requirements for fresh products differ from conventional pet food. Refrigerated meals have limited shelf lives, typically requiring consumption within several days of opening, while frozen products must be thawed before serving. These handling requirements represent a practical consideration for pet owners evaluating fresh food options.

Inclusive Environment

The Reading location maintains an inclusive atmosphere, welcoming customers from all backgrounds. The store is recognized as friendly and safe for LGBTQ+ individuals and families, reflecting a broader company culture of customer respect and equal service.
