Plan your visit to Morlatton Village

When: Wednesday and Saturday, 9am to 12pm, April through October. Other times by appointment.
Schedule: Events run April through October on third Saturdays or other posted dates; the Trust posts speakers, demonstrations, exhibits, and archaeological digs on its events calendar.
Parking: Free lot at the Morlatton Village Trailhead, across from the White Horse Inn.

Morlatton Village is a cluster of four 18th-century stone buildings on Old Philadelphia Pike in Douglassville, on the Schuylkill River in Amity Township. Swedish settlers moved here in the early 1700s and the site grew into a trading and tavern stop, which is why the Historic Preservation Trust of Berks County calls it the place where the county began. The Trust owns and maintains the buildings.

The Mouns Jones House, built in 1716, is the oldest documented dwelling in Berks County, with a Swedish-style corner fireplace, leaded casement windows, and black locust floorboards cut on the property. Next to it are the George Douglass Mansion of 1765, a Georgian house whose owner gave Douglassville its name, the White Horse Inn of about 1762, a former tavern that now holds the Trust offices and hosts private events, and the Michael Fulp House, which is under restoration.

We visit on a Wednesday or Saturday morning between April and October, when volunteer archaeologists are on site at the Mouns Jones House and can walk us through the buildings. Tours at other times are by appointment, and the Trust runs talks, demonstrations, and archaeological digs on posted event dates through the season. The village sits on the Thun Trail section of the Schuylkill River Trail, so we can also arrive by bike.
