Plan the day
The Pennsylvania Anthracite Heritage Museum is a state history museum in McDade Park in Scranton, PA. It tells the story of hard coal mining, the industries around it and the immigrant culture of northeastern Pennsylvania.
The permanent exhibition, Anthracite People, covers hard coal mining, the industries that grew around it and the immigrant families who worked them. The Lackawanna County Coal Mine Tour shares McDade Park, so you can pair the galleries with a ride 300 feet underground. The museum also keeps the Scranton Iron Furnaces, four stone blast furnaces at a second site, open dawn to dusk all year.
Before you go
Tickets can be bought online in advance. Groups of ten or more can call ahead for a guided tour, offered most days of the week all year, including the winter months when the galleries are closed to walk-in visitors.
