About the event
Reading Civic Theater brings Carrie: The Musical to its stage on Perkiomen Avenue in Exeter. Adapted from Stephen King's novel, the show follows Carrie White, a teenager who wants nothing more than to belong. She is a target for the popular crowd at school and overlooked by nearly everyone else, while at home she lives under the control of a mother whose love comes with a tight grip.
What no one around her realizes is that Carrie has discovered a power of her own, and she is willing to use it when she is pushed far enough. The score by Michael Gore and Dean Pitchford, with a book by Lawrence D. Cohen, turns that story into something sung from the inside, giving Carrie and her mother the kind of music that lets an audience hear what the characters cannot say to each other.
It makes for a fitting October evening of theater in Berks County, with a story that builds steadily toward one of the most familiar moments in American popular fiction. Given the intensity of the material, parents may want to look into the content before bringing younger children.
