Reading Civic Theater brings Carrie: The Musical to its Exeter stage for an evening performance. Based on the Stephen King novel, the show follows Carrie White, a teenager who wants nothing more than to belong. She is a target for the popular crowd at school and overlooked by nearly everyone else, while at home she lives under the control of a mother whose love comes with a heavy hand.

What no one around her realizes is that Carrie has discovered a power of her own, and she is willing to use it when pushed far enough. The musical, with a score by Michael Gore and Dean Pitchford and a book by Lawrence D. Cohen, turns that story into a night of pop rock numbers and mounting tension that builds toward one of the most familiar prom scenes in American storytelling.

The production runs about two and a half hours at 4350 Perkiomen Avenue. Given the story's intensity, it tends to suit teens and adults more than young children, so families may want to consider that when planning the evening.
