Reading Civic Theater brings Carrie: The Musical to its Exeter stage for an evening performance on Friday, October 23 at 7:30 PM. The story follows Carrie White, a teenager who wants nothing more than to belong. School offers her little comfort, and at home she lives under the watchful eye of a mother whose love comes wrapped in strict control. Then Carrie discovers she has a power unlike anything the people around her expect, and she is willing to use it when pushed.
Adapted from Stephen King's first novel, the musical pairs that familiar story with a score by Michael Gore and lyrics by Dean Pitchford, with a book by Lawrence D. Cohen. It trades horror spectacle for something more intimate, built around the pull between a mother and daughter and the everyday cruelty of high school hallways.
