Carrie White wants what most teenagers want, which is a place to belong. At school she is a target for the popular crowd and invisible to everyone else, and at home she lives under a mother whose love comes wrapped in control. What no one around her knows is that Carrie has discovered a power of her own, and she is willing to use it if she is pushed far enough.

Reading Civic Theatre brings the musical stage version of Stephen King's story to Exeter, with a book by Lawrence D. Cohen, lyrics by Dean Pitchford, and music by Michael Gore, the songwriting team behind "Fame." The score carries the show from crowded high school hallways to quiet moments of longing and on to a prom night that no one in the audience forgets.

The performance takes place at the theater's home in the Fox Theatre Complex on Perkiomen Avenue, a short drive from Reading. Its blend of suspense, sympathy, and full throated singing makes it a strong late October pick for theatergoers and for anyone curious about how a familiar story works when it is set to music.
