Two of Berks County's most recognizable groups share a stage at the Goodwill Beneficial Association ballroom in Reading for an evening of funk, soul, and R&B. The Groovemasters, featuring bassist Bennie Sims and keyboardist Cliff Starkey, join Erich Cawalla's Uptown Band, a Reading-based ensemble known for covering everything from Motown and doo-wop to today's hits.

The two bands have deep ties. Sims, the leader of The Groovemasters, also serves as the original music producer for The Uptown Band and its leader, Erich Cawalla. Sims and Starkey have performed with names including Dizzy Gillespie, The Temptations, Al Jarreau, and Tower of Power, and their work has been seen nationally on Good Morning America and a PBS special featuring Aretha Franklin, Lou Rawls, and The Spinners.

A portion of the proceeds benefits the Alisa B. Memorial Vocal Scholarship with the Reading Musical Foundation, so the night doubles as support for young singers in the area. Expect a danceable set list and a room full of neighbors.
