About the event
Imani Winds comes to the WCR Center for the Arts in downtown Reading on Friday, November 13 at 7:30 PM. The GRAMMY-winning quintet has reshaped what a wind ensemble can sound like, pairing flute, oboe, clarinet, horn, and bassoon with dynamic playing, adventurous programming, and outreach work that has reached listeners of all ages. The group's place in the classical music section of the Smithsonian National Museum of African American History and Culture speaks to the mark it has made.
The evening's program, "The People Could Fly: America at 250," blends music with narrative. Inspired by the African American folktale of the same name, it marks America's 250th year with a meditation on freedom, memory, and transformation, moving through works by living composers who give voice to migration, resistance, and the ongoing pursuit of justice.
This concert is part of the Friends of Chamber Music of Reading series, a nonprofit that presents chamber music to the public with no admission fee. Support comes from a Gertrude Sternbergh grant from the Reading Musical Foundation. Come early if you would like a seat near the front.
