Monarch migration reaches its peak in September, and Hawk Mountain Sanctuary marks the moment with a day built around these travelers and the work of keeping them thriving. At the Monarch Conservation Station, biologists John Drummond of Lafayette College and Cammy Freed of Hope Meadow in Lancaster share what they know about monarch biology, the pressures facing butterflies and other pollinators, and the steps anyone can take at home. Microscopes are set up so visitors can look closely at eggs, caterpillars, chrysalides, and adult butterflies.
The Amphitheater hosts a monarch presentation at 11 AM, followed by a live monarch tagging demonstration at 1 PM that shows how volunteers help track the long journey to Mexico. Anyone curious about joining that effort can learn how to contribute as a citizen scientist, and both biologists will have guidance on gardening for monarchs and native pollinators.
Stop by the Information Pavilion for displays covering Hawk Mountain's butterfly count and its monarch migration data. Children have their own lineup of crafts, puzzles, and hands on learning displays, making this an easy outing for families spending a fall morning on the mountain.
