The Boscov Theater hosts an evening of two documentaries about artists whose work draws attention to the living world and a changing climate. The feature, Ackroyd & Harvey: The Art of Activism by Fiona Cunningham-Reid, follows British artists Heather Ackroyd and Dan Harvey, whose long creative partnership has become a touchstone for the environmental movement. The pair are known for a form of bio-chemical photography that uses the light sensitivity of chlorophyll to create images in living grass, with pictures emerging through variations in chlorophyll density as the grass grows. The film considers where art, hope, and love stand in an uncertain moment.
Sharing the program is Of Wind and Water, a short by Alexandra Lexton featuring Ned Kahn, a sculptor who works at the meeting point of science and art. Kahn builds pieces that respond to wind, water, fog, and light, moving and shifting with the forces around them and highlighting the complexity of natural phenomena. Much of his work sets out to make an invisible aspect of nature visible.
The screening lands during Climate Week in New York, where the United Nations convenes its Climate Summit around climate action. It is a good fit for anyone in Berks County who follows contemporary art, documentary film, or the conversation about how creative work shapes the way we see the natural world.
