Nolde Forest Environmental Education Center hosts an evening built for curious listeners, beginning indoors with a story and moving outside as the light fades. It is a gentle introduction to the woods after dark, guided by staff who know these trails well.
After the reading, the group heads out for a short hike in search of eyeshine, the bright glow that appears when a flashlight beam catches the eyes of deer, foxes, moths, spiders, and other night active animals. That reflection comes from a layer behind the eye that helps many creatures see in low light, and once you know what to look for, the forest starts looking back. Along the way there is time to listen for owls, insects, and the other sounds that fill the property in late October.
Dress for cooler autumn evenings and wear shoes suited to uneven ground. Families with children of any age are welcome, and the program is a good fit for anyone who has wondered what moves through Nolde Forest once the sun goes down.
