Help for Berks County Adults and Children With Intellectual Disability or Autism
The Berks County Mental Health / Developmental Disabilities Program arranges services for people living with an intellectual disability or autism so they can be supported in their own homes and communities. These services are funded by Federal Medicaid dollars and base funding.
Individuals living with an intellectual disability or autism may have access to Supports Coordination as well as additional funding for supports and services. Three waiver programs pay for services: the Person/Family Directed Support Waiver and the Community Living Waiver, both available to individuals age 3 and over and both with a financial cap, and the Consolidated Waiver, also for individuals age 3 and over, with no financial cap.
The services that can be funded include in-home and community support, Community Participation Support, companion, respite, residential habilitation, life sharing and supported living, employment support and benefits counseling, person-directed supports, remote support and assistive technology, environment accessibility adaptations, transportation, specialized therapies and nursing not covered by insurance, behavioral support, homemaker and chore services, participant goods and services, and educational supports.
To start, contact Service Access and Management and ask to speak with an Intake Manager for ID/Autism Services. The telephone number is 610-236-0530. Once you are found eligible, a supports coordinator helps you decide how your services will be funded. Funding depends on the type of service you need and on the money the Office of Developmental Programs provides to the county through the Human Services Block Grant Plan.
The county offices are at 633 Court Street, Reading, PA 19601. Building hours are 8 AM to 5 PM and the building is closed on holidays; department hours may vary.
