One-To-One Mentoring for Kids From Big Brothers Big Sisters of Berks County
Big Brothers Big Sisters of Berks County matches a child with a volunteer adult mentor, called a Big, through its One-To-One Program, which the agency calls its best known program and the cornerstone of the agency.
In a One-To-One match, a positive adult role model aged 19 or older is matched with a Little Brother or Little Sister for at least one year. The Little and the Big meet for a minimum of 8-to-10 hours per month. The Big, the Little, and the parent or guardian of the Little decide together what the outings are and when they occur, with guidance and support from BBBS professional staff. The agency describes tremendous flexibility in this program.

Children are not always matched right away. While waiting to be matched in the One-To-One program, a child can take part in COUL, the Club of Unmatched Littles, a group-mentoring program whose supervised activities are held weekly and range from informational and educational to just plain fun. Teens already part of Big Brothers Big Sisters, ages 13 and older, matched or unmatched, can join the Teen Program, a group program that meets at least once a month and is planned by a peer-elected TEEN Executive Committee to teach adult-life skills and help teens prepare for decisions after high school graduation.
The agency also runs SMART, a school-based mentoring program at Conrad Weiser East Elementary, Conrad Weiser West Elementary and Conrad Weiser Middle School in the Conrad Weiser School District, Hamburg Middle School in the Hamburg School District, Oley Valley Elementary School in the Oley Valley School District, Andrew Maier Elementary School in the Fleetwood School District, and Glenside Elementary School in the Reading School District. In SMART, college students, business professionals or high school students work with the Littles for at least one hour per week at the school in a carefully supervised setting.
