Free Breakfast and Low Cost Lunch at Brandywine Heights Schools

Brandywine Heights Area School District serves breakfast and lunch to its students in every school cafeteria, with breakfast free for all students and lunch sold at a set price. Breakfast and lunch are available to all Brandywine Heights Area School District students, and the food service follows National School Lunch Program regulations. Lunch costs $3.00 at the elementary school and the intermediate school, and $3.15 at the middle school and the high school.

Meals follow a traditional menu with Offer vs. Serve. Students are offered one serving each of meat or meat alternate, fruit, vegetable, bread or bread alternate, and milk each day. A student needs to take at least 3 of those 5 items, and one must be a fruit or vegetable, for the meal to count at the meal price. Extra items such as ice cream, bagged snacks, bottled water and beverages other than milk are not included in the price of the meal. The breakfast menu runs on a one week cycle and the lunch menu on a four week cycle, and alternative meals are also available.

Payment goes through a computerized point of sale system. Each student has a meal account tied to their student ID number. In the lunch line the student enters their PIN, which is their student ID number, or swipes their ID card at the register. If a child forgets the PIN or loses the ID, a food service staff member can look it up at the register. To add money, log into your Infinite Campus account, click School Store on the left hand menu, then School, Food Service Department, Load Cafeteria Funds. Money left in the account at the end of the school year carries over to the next year.

The district runs a free and reduced price breakfast and lunch program, and free or reduced meal status is held securely in the payment system so the meal is processed the same way it is for every other student. The page does not give the income rules or how to apply for free or reduced price meals, so ask the food service office.

If a student does not have enough money in the account, the meal can be charged, which leaves a negative balance that must be paid immediately. The district's charging procedures and school board policy 808 on food service are posted on the site.

If a student moves out of the district, graduates, or an online payment was made in error, fill out the Account Balance Request Form to ask for a refund, transfer the money to another student, or donate it. Check refund requests are accepted only up to 30 days after the student's last day of school, and after that positive balances are donated to help other students. Check refunds can only be issued if the account holds more than $5. Balances of graduating seniors are automatically transferred to sibling accounts.

Email questions about a food service account to cafe@bhasd.org. The district office is at 200 W. Weis St., Topton, Pennsylvania 19562, and the phone number is 610-682-5100.
