Health Screenings and Health Talks From Reading Hospital CORE Programs
Reading Hospital's CORE (Community OutReach and Engagement) programs bring health screenings, health talks by hospital staff, and safety and mental health trainings to community groups, organizations and events. All Reading Hospital CORE Programs are listed as free to the community.
Health screenings give the public a chance to catch medical problems early. They include blood pressure screening, body mass index, and other screenings available by request. These screenings are offered on an annual basis at various times throughout the year, and registration is required. The screenings section describes them as free or low-cost, so ask about any cost when you register. For more information about screenings, call 833-34-TOWER.
Through the Speakers Bureau, physicians, nurses and other hospital staff give talks on healthcare topics: behavioral health subjects such as adolescent addiction, substance use disorder, and opioids and pain medications; preventing sports injuries; brain aneurysms and stroke; breast cancer, cancer risk factors and cancer screenings for high-risk individuals; advance directives, physical therapy and weight loss surgery; heart failure; sleep apnea; pediatric weight management and child abuse; managing your medications; healthcare careers; community health, healthy lifestyles, HIV/AIDS and immunizations; exercise in the geriatric population, fall prevention and home modification for safety; celiac disease; stop the bleed and bike safety; and pregnancy, labor, and delivery.
Two trainings are also offered. Mental Health First Aid Training teaches you how to identify, understand, and respond to signs of mental illnesses and substance use disorders, and how to connect someone to care. Stop the Bleed, part of a nationwide program, teaches bystanders life-saving actions to take in a bleeding emergency before professional help arrives.
Local community-based organizations and businesses can also ask the Community Wellness Department about hospital staff taking part in health fairs, resource fairs, festivals and other events, where staff can provide health and wellness education, information or screening services to those attending.
Opportunities can be scheduled Monday through Friday during regular business hours from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. To request a program, download the Community Outreach Form from the CORE Programs page at towerhealth.org and email the completed form to CommunityWellness@towerhealth.org. Questions about CORE Program opportunities go to the same email address.
Organizations can separately ask for volunteer help from hospital employees. For that, complete the CORE Program Volunteer Opportunity Registration Form, which is different from the Community Outreach Form, and submit it to CommunityWellness@towerhealth.org. CORE Program staff will send event confirmation. Allow 30 days for a volunteer request to be processed, approved and coordinated.
