Long-Term Care Ombudsman for Nursing Home and Personal Care Residents in Berks County
The Berks County Area Agency on Aging provides Ombudsman services, which advocate for people who receive long-term care and work to resolve their problems and concerns. An Ombudsman is a trained person who helps protect the rights of older Pennsylvanians living in long-term care facilities. The program comes from the Older Americans Act, and the Pennsylvania Department of Aging's Long-term Care Ombudsman Program contracts with 52 Area Agencies on Aging to provide it. Long-term care here means a living environment for a person residing in Skilled Nursing, Assisted Living, a Personal Care Home, or a participant in an Older Adult Daily Living Center, as well as a consumer living in the community.
An Ombudsman provides information, answers questions, investigates complaints and offers assistance to resolve a resident's problems about the quality of care or treatment they receive.

Volunteers also serve as Ombudsmen. Volunteer Ombudsmen receive an orientation and training covering an overview of the program, characteristics of long term care residents, resident rights, communication skills, and the role volunteers play. Each volunteer is assigned to a specific facility in Berks County and is required to visit it 1 to 4 times per month, a minimum of 2 hours per visit or total, with continued education required to maintain volunteer Ombudsman status.
