Long-Term Care Ombudsman Help for Nursing Home and Assisted Living Residents
The Berks County Area Agency on Aging provides Ombudsman services, which advocate for consumers of long-term care services and work to resolve residents' issues and concerns. An Ombudsman is a trained individual who helps protect the rights of older Pennsylvanians living in long-term care facilities. The program was established by the Older Americans Act, and the Pennsylvania Department of Aging's Long-term Care Ombudsman Program contracts with 52 Area Agencies on Aging to provide these services. In Berks County the work is done by Area Agency on Aging staff and volunteers.
Long-term care here means a living environment for a person residing in Skilled Nursing, Assisted Living, a Personal Care Home, or a participant in an Older Adult Daily Living Center, as well as a consumer living in the community.
Ombudsmen provide information, answer questions, investigate complaints and offer assistance to resolve resident problems about the quality of care or treatment provided to a resident.

The office is at 400 E. Wyomissing Ave., Mohnton, PA 19540, and its hours are Monday through Friday 8:00 am to 5:00 pm. The program also uses volunteers. Volunteer Ombudsmen receive an orientation and training that covers an overview of the Ombudsman program, characteristics of long term care residents, resident rights, communication skills, and the role volunteers play. Each volunteer is assigned to a specific facility in Berks County and is required to visit 1 to 4 times per month, with a minimum of 2 hours per visit or total, and continued education is required to maintain volunteer Ombudsman status.
