Report Elder Abuse or Neglect in Berks County
The Berks County Area Agency on Aging runs protective services for older adults and explains how to report someone you are worried about. Elder abuse and crimes targeting older people come in many forms, including neglect, physical abuse, financial abuse and sexual abuse.
Any person who believes that an older adult is being abused, neglected, exploited or abandoned may call the elder abuse hotline. You do not have to be a relative or a professional. Reports can be made for an older adult whether they live at home or in a care facility like a nursing home, personal care home or hospital, and reports can be anonymous.
The statewide elder abuse hotline is 1-800-490-8505. It is staffed 24 hours a day, seven days a week.
Signs to watch for, which do not always mean elder abuse is happening:
- Bruises or broken bones
- Weight loss
- Dementia blamed on "old age" when the real cause is malnutrition or drug interactions or side effects
- The older person never goes outside or never sees visitors
- Withdrawing large sums of money from a savings account without apparent reason
- Signing over his or her home to a relative
- Isolation or increased confusion
If your concern is about the quality of care an older person is receiving from a facility or a caregiver, call your local Area Agency on Aging for guidance. The Berks County Area Agency on Aging is at 400 E. Wyomissing Ave., Mohnton, PA 19540. Its general office number is 610-478-6500, open Monday through Friday 8:00 am to 5:00 pm, with 24 hour emergency service. The agency serves county residents with services for the over 60 population, including protective services.
County offices at 633 Court Street, Reading, PA 19601 are open 8 AM to 5 PM and closed on holidays, and department hours may vary.
