Visiting Hours, Flower Rules and Visitor Help at Indiantown Gap National Cemetery
Indiantown Gap National Cemetery in Annville sets the rules for visiting the grounds and decorating graves, and it offers a golf cart ride to visitors who cannot walk to a gravesite. The cemetery is at 60 Indiantown Gap Road, Annville, PA 17003, and the phone number is 717-865-5254.
The grounds are open daily from dawn to dusk. The office is open Monday through Friday from 8:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. and is closed federal holidays except Memorial Day. There is a kiosk on site, and a cemetery map and driving directions are on the cemetery's page at cem.va.gov.
A golf cart is available to physically challenged visitors who need assistance getting to gravesites, from 8:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m., Monday through Friday, weather and ground conditions permitting.
What you may leave on a grave is limited, and the rules are posted at the cemetery where the public can see them:
- Fresh cut flowers are allowed at any time and are removed when they become unsightly.
- A casket spray and three floral pieces that accompany the casket or urn at the burial are placed on the completed grave, and removed at the cemetery's discretion when unsightly or when needed for operations such as mowing.
- Artificial flowers are permitted only from November 15 through March 1, when they do not interfere with grounds maintenance.
- Potted plants are not suggested but are permitted 10 days before through 10 days after Easter.
- Christmas wreaths, grave blankets and other seasonal adornments may be placed from December 1 through January 9, and all of them are removed on January 10. Grave blankets can be no larger than two feet by three feet. Wreath easels over 18" are not permitted and will be removed.
- Permanent plantings, statues, vigil lights, breakable objects, Christmas trees, balloons, pumpkins and similar items are not permitted on graves.
- Floral items and decorations cannot be secured to headstones or markers, and permanent in-ground containers are not authorized. The cemetery provides temporary plastic containers to the public for floral arrangements.
Items VA considers offensive, inconsistent with the dignity of the cemetery, or hazardous to cemetery personnel, such as beads or wires that may become entangled in mowing equipment, are not permitted. Unauthorized items will be removed by cemetery personnel and discarded. During the mowing and grounds maintenance season, all floral items will be removed from graves when necessary to allow mowing and maintenance. Anything placed on a gravesite becomes the property of the US Government and will be disposed of under federal regulations.
Flowers are placed at your own risk. The cemetery is not responsible for flowers after they are placed and will not replace them if they are damaged, lost or stolen. Deer and other wildlife may eat fresh flowers and arrangements.
Stay on paved road areas and do not park on any grassy areas. Instead of small individual grave flags, the cemetery displays the Avenue of Flags as a tribute to all veterans.
Do not bring a weapon. VA regulations 38 CFR 1.218 prohibit carrying firearms, openly or concealed, explosives or other dangerous or deadly weapons on VA property, except for official purposes such as military funeral honors. Offenders may be subject to a fine, removal from the premises, or arrest.
Two public ceremonies are held each year, rain or shine: a Memorial Day Ceremony in May, and a Veterans Day Ceremony on the Sunday before Veterans Day at 2:00 p.m. The grounds also hold the Pennsylvania Veterans' Memorial, the largest monument in VA's national cemeteries, standing 107 feet high and 360 feet long.
If you are driving from Harrisburg International Airport, the cemetery is 25 miles northeast. Take Interstate 283 North to Interstate 83 North to Interstate 81 North and take exit 85B; bear right off the exit and the entrance is a quarter mile on the right.
