Kutztown Area School District is a public school district serving students from kindergarten through twelfth grade in Kutztown, Berks County, Pennsylvania. Administrative offices are located at 10 Deisher Lane, Kutztown, PA 19530, and the district can be reached by phone at 610-683-7361. The district operates under the vision statement "Maximize potential, embrace change, create the future," a phrase that appears across its planning documents, annual reports and public communications.
Four schools make up the district: Greenwich Elementary School, Kutztown Elementary School, Kutztown Middle School and Kutztown High School. Total enrollment was approximately 1,338 students during the 2021-22 school year, placing Kutztown among the smaller districts in Berks County by headcount while making it the largest by land area. The attendance boundary covers roughly 99 square miles of borough and rural township territory, a geography that shapes much of how the district organizes transportation, communication and scheduling.
Formal schooling in the Kutztown area dates to the 1800s, when Pennsylvania's adoption of the Public School Law established the framework for locally funded public education. A school building constructed in Kutztown Borough in 1892 remained in service until 1977, a span of 85 years that covered the transition from one-room and multi-room borough schools to the consolidated district model familiar today. The present district structure, with two elementary buildings feeding into a single middle school and high school, reflects the mid-twentieth-century consolidation of smaller rural schools across Berks County.
Instruction is delivered across the district's four buildings, with elementary students attending either Greenwich Elementary or Kutztown Elementary depending on where they live within the attendance area. Students then continue to Kutztown Middle School and Kutztown High School. The district publishes annual student achievement reports along with budget and finance presentations, giving residents access to performance data and fiscal information outside of regularly scheduled board meetings.
Long-range planning is documented in a district strategic plan, and a separate Special Education Plan is filed with the Pennsylvania Department of Education as required by state regulation. Both documents are made available to the public through district channels.
Kutztown Area School District provides special education services to eligible students across the thirteen eligibility conditions recognized under Pennsylvania regulations, including autism, intellectual disability, specific learning disability, speech and language impairment, emotional disturbance, hearing and vision impairments, and mentally gifted status. Programming is individualized and guided by the district's Special Education Plan.
The district conducts ongoing child find and screening activities to identify school-age children who may require specially designed instruction. Early intervention identification is available for young children from age three to school age. Screening and evaluation services are provided at no cost to families. Parents or guardians who wish to request an evaluation may submit a written request to a building principal or to the Assistant Superintendent, reachable at (610) 683-7361. Information about parental rights, mediation procedures and due process options is provided on request, and families are encouraged to contact the district directly with questions about eligibility or the evaluation timeline.
Because the district covers roughly 99 square miles, student transportation is one of its most visible daily operations. Working in coordination with Eshelman Transportation Company, buses and vans make close to 1,300 stops each school day and travel more than 3,200 miles. The fleet transports over 1,400 students in total, a figure that includes district students as well as charter school and non-public school students who reside within district boundaries and are entitled to transportation under state law. Routes run on a timeline approaching three hours, reflecting the distances involved in reaching outlying portions of the attendance area.
The district also recruits drivers for its transportation operation, with open positions promoted through a campaign using the tagline "Drive with Purpose. Make a Difference." Employment opportunities across all categories, including instructional, support and operational roles, are posted by the district.
Decisions about closings, delays and early dismissals are communicated through the Parent Link notification system, which sends messages by phone, email and text. Announcements are also shared with local television stations. Morning decisions are typically announced by approximately 6:00 to 6:15 a.m., giving families time to adjust before the start of the school day.
In addition to traditional snow days, Kutztown Area School District uses Flexible Instructional Days, commonly referred to as FID. These are blended, at-home learning days built around a mix of synchronous and asynchronous work, with schedules and expectations adjusted to be developmentally appropriate for each grade level. FIDs are generally used during icy or otherwise unsafe travel conditions and count as regular days on the school calendar, which helps the district avoid extending the academic year. When evening activities are affected by weather, the district Director responsible for athletics, student activities and community relations notifies coaches, advisors and outside organizations that use district facilities.
Families moving into the attendance area can find a step-by-step enrollment process for grades 1 through 12, including required registration forms and documentation guidance. Kindergarten registration follows its own annual timeline. A parent portal provides access to online forms, and the same Parent Link system used for emergency notifications also serves routine district communication.
The district identifies a set of shared values that guide its programs and decision-making: lifelong learning, collaboration among home, school and community, celebration of diversity, healthy lifestyle choices, safe and interactive learning environments, and ethical decision-making. These principles are reflected in the strategic plan and in the district's public reporting.
Beyond classroom instruction, Kutztown Area School District supports athletics and a range of student activities, and it coordinates with community organizations that use school facilities. For a district serving a borough that is also home to a state university, the schools function as a central gathering point for the surrounding townships as well as the town itself.
Residents seeking information about enrollment, special education evaluations, transportation routes, employment openings or board documents can contact the district office directly.
