About the event
The 5K Run for Shelter brings runners and walkers to Gring's Mill Recreation Area on a Saturday morning in early October, with the course following the Union Canal towpath along the Tulpehocken Creek. The towpath is flat, shaded, and well suited to first-time 5K participants as well as people chasing a time.
This is a charity 5K, and timing is handled by Pretzel City Sports, a familiar presence at road races across Berks County and the surrounding region. Expect the usual pre-race gathering at the recreation area before the 9:00 AM start.
Gring's Mill is one of the most popular spots in the county for a morning out, so the setting works well for families who want to cheer from the sidelines or walk the course together. Parking and restrooms are available on site, and the wooded stretch along the creek is at its best as the leaves begin to turn.
