Brinton Lodge opens its doors for an evening walk through one of eastern Berks County's oldest landmarks. The guided tour lasts about 90 minutes and leads visitors through the centuries-old stucco mansion, including its pillared parlor, grand master staircase, and elaborately decorated bedrooms. Guides share the stories that have gathered around the house, which some visitors describe as haunted and others call fertile ground for unexplained phenomena.
The building's history gives the tour plenty to draw on. Named for Reading hotelier Caleb Brinton, who acquired it in 1927 and ran an exclusive club there during Prohibition, the lodge hosted well known names of stage and screen, including guests who stopped in after performances at Pottstown's Sunnybrook Ballroom. Paranormal investigators have studied the property for decades, and the lodge invites guests to bring ghost hunting apps on their phones along for the walk.
The site sits on Route 724 between Reading and Pottstown, directly across from the Schuylkill River, and is also home to the Hidden River Brewing Company brewery and pub, which serves a light menu along with a rotating selection of beers plus Pennsylvania wine and cider.
