Halloween season brings an after-hours walk through the quieter corners of the Daniel Boone Homestead, led by lantern light across a property that covers nearly 600 acres of fields and woods. Berks County author and paranormal researcher Charles J. Adams III guides the group, drawing on the local legends he has spent a long career collecting and retelling for readers and radio listeners around Reading.

The route takes in the mystery of Boone's bones, the search for unmarked graves at the DeTurk Cemetery where investigators have worked with divining rods, and the story of the Bertolet Log House. Built in 1737 in the Oley Valley and moved to the Homestead in 1968 to save it from demolition, the house holds an unusual architectural feature known as a soul hole, a solid wooden block set into an opening in the wall.

The tour starts at the Wayside Lodge, and guests are asked to bring a lantern of their own. Group size is limited and registration is arranged in advance. The program is presented by the Daniel Boone Homestead Associates, with proceeds supporting the site. Please leave pets at home, service animals excepted, and note that smoking is not permitted.
