The Boyertown State Theatre turns its screen over to one of the strangest cult favorites of the 1980s for a late night Halloween season show. Killer Klowns from Outer Space follows a small town overrun by alien visitors who look like circus clowns and travel in a big top spaceship, armed with cotton candy cocoons, popcorn guns and shadow puppets. The Chiodo Brothers built the whole thing out of practical effects and oversized costumes, which is a big part of why it still plays so well with a crowd.
At 88 minutes, it moves fast, and it lands best exactly the way it is being shown here: after dark, in a room full of people laughing and groaning together. The theater's bar and concession stand are part of the experience, so you can settle in with something before the lights go down.
This is a good pick if you like your Halloween viewing on the goofy side of scary, and it pairs naturally with the rest of the theater's late October lineup on North Reading Avenue in downtown Boyertown.
