Scouting America's Hawk Mountain Council gathers supporters for the Spirit of Scouting Breakfast, a morning program at the Redner's Event Center inside the Reading Fightin Phils ballpark. The council celebrates the spirit of Scouting along with the 250th anniversary of the United States, making this a fitting year to look at how local young people learn citizenship and service.
Money raised at the breakfast goes toward the character and leadership development programs that Scouting offers across Berks and Schuylkill counties. Those programs reach packs, troops, crews and posts chartered by churches, schools, civic groups and businesses throughout the region, and they lean on volunteers who give their time to camping trips, outdoor skills and leadership training.
The setting adds something to the morning. The event space looks out over the FirstEnergy Stadium playing field, so guests get a ballpark view with breakfast. Anyone curious about Scouting in the area, from longtime volunteers to parents just starting to ask questions, will find plenty of people to talk with.
