Penn Avenue in West Reading sets aside the second Friday of each month for its independent shops and locally owned restaurants, and the October edition keeps the pattern going. Storefronts stay open into the evening, kitchens are serving, and the whole stretch is built for walking from one block to the next at your own pace.
Local musicians play along the avenue from 6 to 8 PM in the warmer months, so the walk comes with a soundtrack as you browse, pick up something you have been meaning to find, and settle on a place for dinner. The event is hosted by the West Reading Community Revitalization Foundation, which organizes it as a way to spotlight the merchants who make up the district.
