After-School Program and Summer Day Camp at the Salvation Army Reading Citadel

The Salvation Army Reading Citadel runs an after-school program and a summer day camp for children at its Learning Center at 301 South 5th Street, Reading, Pennsylvania 19602.

The after-school program is designed for children in grades 1 through 5 and is held Monday through Friday from 2:45 to 5:00 PM. Children focus on homework, emergent arts, character building and physical education. Snacks and a hot nutritious meal are provided to each child.

It costs an average of $177.27 to cover the cost of each child in the after-school program, but families are charged $25 a week per child and $10 for additional siblings. Financial aid is available for families who cannot afford full payment.

The summer day camp is a seven-week program for children ages 6 to 11, with breakfast, lunch and snacks provided. Kids take part in creative education programs meant to address summer learning loss, weekly activities and field trips. The cost for parents to send their children to camp is $50 per week for each child. The camp hours appear two ways: the camp description gives 8:00 AM to 3:30 PM, and the hours of operation list gives 8:30 AM to 4:00 PM, Monday through Friday, so ask which applies.

The Salvation Army also sends campers aged 7 to 17, depending on the session, for a week-long stay at Camp Ladore, its summer sleepaway camp in the Pocono Mountains, with nature study, swimming, boating, arts and crafts, music instruction, archery, hiking, organized games and ropes challenge courses.

The page does not say how to sign up, whether there is a waiting list, or which weeks the summer camp runs. For general questions, the Reading Citadel's number is (610) 373-5208, and Captain Hector Cid-Ciriaco can be reached at Hector.Cid-Ciriaco@use.salvationarmy.org.
