Violence Prevention Education and Camp Safe Berks From Safe Berks

Safe Berks has an Education and Outreach Department, and its community educators offer programs to raise awareness and to prevent domestic and sexual violence. The department also runs Camp Safe Berks, a free week-long summer day camp for Berks County youth and adults.

Camp Safe Berks is called a teen alliance to end violence. It brings together Berks County youth and adults to form alliances of support that promote peace and justice in schools and communities. Through the week the camp focuses on several oppressions including Adultism, Racism, Sexism, Heterosexism and Classism, and participants look at the role oppression plays as a root cause of violence. Participants take part in discussions and group activities that build over the week and are designed to grow empathy and acceptance of differences in others. They also learn skills to see, understand and address social injustice, and to build strategies to be promoters of peace and justice in their own schools and communities.

Safe Berks staff also share information about the agency's free services by staffing tables at community events. To ask Safe Berks staff to attend an event, contact Erica Caceres, Interim Director of Development, at ericac@safeberks.org or 610-373-1206 x 116.

For more information about the Education and Outreach Department and the free services available, contact Ashley Moyer, Director of Education and Outreach Programs, at 610-370-7811, ext. 132, or AshleyM@SafeBerks.org. The department's 2023 education and outreach curriculum and a bilingual brochure are posted at safeberks.org.

The main office is at 255 Chestnut Street, Reading, PA 19602. The office phone is 610-373-1206, and office hours are Monday through Friday 8:00AM until 4:30PM, closed on most major holidays.

In Safe Berks’s words

Camp Safe Berks is a free week-long summer day camp which brings together Berks County youth and adults to form alliances of support that promote peace and justice in our schools and communities. Camp Safe Berks begins the process of developing youth as leaders in oppression-work and is built on the principle that violence is anything that hinders, limits, or damages us as human beings, including not only direct hurt but the long-term internalized effects of that hurt.
