Free Legal Help and Protection From Abuse Orders From Safe Berks
Safe Berks Legal Advocates help victims of domestic violence and sexual assault with protection orders and with the police and court process. An advocate can come with you to a police interview, come with you to criminal hearings, and assist with filing Protection From Abuse (PFA) Orders, Sexual Violence Protection Orders (SVPO), or Protection From Intimidation Orders (PFI). All Legal Services are free, confidential and available in all languages.
To schedule an appointment with Legal Services, call 610-373-1206, ext. 107. For legal questions and concerns, call the same number and leave a message. Messages are checked frequently by the Legal Advocates, who will call clients back.
Applications for Temporary Protection Orders are made between 8 a.m. and 2 p.m. at the Protection From Abuse Office on the 1st floor of the Berks County Services Center at 633 Court Street in Reading. That office is in the county building, not at Safe Berks. You may be eligible for Safe Berks legal representation at no cost, but legal representation is not guaranteed. If a hearing date is scheduled, call the Safe Berks office at 610-373-1206 ext 107 to schedule an appointment.
The Safe Berks main office is at 255 Chestnut Street, Reading, PA 19602, phone 610-373-1206, open Monday through Friday 8:00AM until 4:30PM and closed on most major holidays.
A free 24-hour hotline is answered at 1-844-789-SAFE (7233), with help available in English and Spanish, and you can text SAFE BERKS to 20121. If you are in danger, escape the website and dial 911.
There is a bilingual brochure about Safe Berks Legal Services posted on safeberks.org. The page does not say how long a case takes or whether you can come in without an appointment, so ask when you call.
