Transitional Housing for Men at Hope Rescue Mission in Reading
Hope Rescue Mission runs a Transitional Housing program in Reading for men who are ready to move beyond emergency shelter into a more stable, goal-oriented living environment. It is the next step after the Mission's emergency shelter, meant to help men save money and work toward a permanent place to live.
To qualify, a man must first complete the emergency shelter program and demonstrate financial stability before moving into transitional housing. The program has two tracks, Work Transition and Fixed Income.
Guests enter into housing contracts of up to six months. Seniors may qualify for extended stays of up to one year. Transitional Housing offers 90 single-occupancy, fully furnished rooms, so each man has his own private space for the time he is in the program.
The program is designed to help residents save money, learn to manage a personal budget, and work closely with the Case Management Team to secure permanent housing that matches their income and circumstances. Case managers also identify and coordinate support for the range of factors behind a man's homelessness, including mental health, addiction, legal and financial struggles.
The Mission offers other programs through the year that residents can take part in: Life Coaching group classes and one-on-one meetings on basic life skills and spiritual enrichment, Workforce Development classes, GED preparation classes, smoking cessation classes, and one-on-one weekly mentorship. For clinical support there is Resilient Horizons, a partnership with Berks Counseling Center offering mental health, drug and alcohol, and dual diagnosis services, along with individual recovery coaching, support groups and referrals to treatment through Recovery Coaching Services, and onsite AA and Narcotics Anonymous meetings.
