Medication Assisted Treatment for Addiction From Berks Community Health Center

Buprenorphine/Suboxone helps people with opioid dependence by reducing withdrawal symptoms. Naltrexone/Vivitrol decreases cravings for opioids or alcohol; it is non-addictive, and the patient must be opioid and alcohol free for a period of time before starting. Nicotine Replacement Therapy reduces withdrawal feelings and cravings for people with nicotine dependence. SMART Recovery groups in English and Spanish are offered for BCHC patients in recovery.

Care follows harm reduction and holistic models, and each patient's treatment is individualized. MAT patients also establish a relationship with a primary care physician at BCHC and have access to all the health care services BCHC offers.

The Pennsylvania Department of Human Services designated Berks Community Health Center as a Center of Excellence. People struggling with an opioid addiction who are seeking support to improve their quality of life will be assigned to a case manager and/or certified peer recovery specialist, who helps with obtaining housing, employment, education or any other area identified as a need.

To discuss your needs or to schedule an appointment for MAT services, call the direct MAT phone line at 484-721-6696 for English or 484-516-5732 for Spanish, during business hours of 8:00 am to 5:30 pm. After hours, new patients interested in help with addiction services should call 484-513-5950. The same MAT numbers are used to refer a patient, family member or friend to the program.

Here is what happens after you call:

• An initial assessment is completed over the phone to determine whether BCHC's MAT services are right for you. If you need a higher level of treatment, staff will offer assistance in coordinating appropriate service.
• If MAT at BCHC is right for you, a face-to-face appointment is scheduled within 24 to 48 hours. At that visit you complete a detailed evaluation that covers your specific MAT needs, includes completing forms to request copies of medical records and behavioral health and/or substance abuse treatment records, and includes changing your primary care doctor to Berks Community Health Center. You will also review and discuss your current addiction needs and be given your first medical appointment.
• At the first medical visit you review and sign a treatment contract and have a medical physical exam, a urine drug screen and labs. Depending on the MAT services being sought, you may begin treatment at that initial medical appointment.

BCHC offers a sliding fee discount program that ensures inability to pay is never a barrier to receiving care. The specific fees are not listed, so ask when you call.

Bilingual English-Spanish medical interpreter staff are on site, and translation services are available in all other languages by phone.
