Life Skills and Recovery Groups for Easy Does It Residents
Easy Does It runs a set of daily recovery and life skills groups for residents of its program in Leesport, covering everything from morning meditation to budgeting, anger management and relapse prevention. The groups are described as programming for residents, so you would be taking part as part of living there. The page does not explain how someone joins the groups or what they cost, so call to ask.
Morning meditation runs Monday through Sunday. It is a short meditation with a reading on a recovery topic and positive affirmations from staff and others in recovery, followed by a group discussion of the day's reading where people are encouraged to share their ideas while keeping respect and confidentiality.
Recovery 101 runs Monday through Friday. It is a topic-driven group on the first three steps, boundaries, self-esteem, poetry, music therapy, budgeting, life skills, confidentiality and more, and it routinely includes readings, worksheets and group work. The daily programming works on distress tolerance, coping skill integration and how to rationally debate ideas. Recovery 102 is a more advanced group that covers self-care practices, family involvement, housing and transportation needs, employment and clinical treatment for mental disorders, and helps people define their own life goals and design their own pathway of recovery.
Other groups include: - Relapse Prevention, a 6-week program over 6 consecutive weeks that covers the difference between being drug and alcohol free and being in recovery, internal, external and sensory triggers, warning signs, relationships, healthy habits and high risk situations, ending with your own relapse prevention plan. - Anger management, where residents learn to recognize early signs of anger and respond differently, with topics such as being self-aware, slowing down, changing your way of thinking and taking a moment. - A Mindfulness Stress Based Reduction group, 6 weeks long, focused on identifying your spiritual self versus your addict self, with stop and think activities, planned mindful moments and a daily homework workbook to practice between sessions. It is based on Buddhist principles, but you do not need to be Buddhist and you can have any higher power of your choice or none. - Boundaries, which connects problem solving skills with cognitive self-change to uncover risky thoughts, feelings, attitudes and beliefs. - Wellness classes: Nutrition Basics covers food safety, meal and weekly menu planning, shopping lists and budgeting. Financial Wellness covers banking, credit and budgeting, building a budget, good and bad debt, credit cards and identity theft, and includes help locating credit reports and banking reports that may be keeping you from opening a bank account or getting utilities or housing. Wellness groups also include yoga and paddle boarding.
Easy Does It does not run job readiness programs itself. It prepares residents to take part in the R3 and BCPS employment programs, where people join an employment group and get vocational assistance, on the job training and job readiness skill training such as resume writing and interview skills for approximately 8 weeks. Residents with low or no income, who have been incarcerated or have prior involvement with the legal system are described as benefiting well from those programs.
