Accessibility Statement

Last Updated: August 11, 2026

We want Berks Connect to be usable by everyone, and we work at that continuously. We will be honest with you: making every part of a website fully accessible to every person is a genuinely difficult task, and despite our best efforts we will not always get it right. What we can promise is this: we do our best, and when something on this site is not accessible to you, we want to hear about it. Tell us, and we will look into it and see if we can fix it.

Our Commitment

We believe that the internet should be available and accessible to anyone, regardless of ability or circumstance. As a local business directory serving Berks County and the surrounding region, we want to ensure that all community members can discover and connect with local businesses through our platform.

We are committed to providing a website that is accessible to the widest possible audience, and we strive to ensure that our services are accessible to people with disabilities including those who are:

  • Blind or have low vision
  • Deaf or hard of hearing
  • Living with motor impairments
  • Living with cognitive disabilities
  • Experiencing temporary disabilities
  • Using assistive technologies

Accessibility Standards

We aim to conform to the Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG) 2.1 at Level AA. These guidelines explain how to make web content more accessible for people with disabilities and more user-friendly for everyone.

The guidelines have three levels of accessibility (A, AA, and AAA). We have chosen Level AA as our target for the Berks Connect website, which addresses the most common barriers for disabled users.

Measures We Take

To help ensure accessibility, we take the following measures:

Design and Development

  • Semantic HTML: We use proper HTML structure including headings, lists, and landmarks to help screen readers navigate content
  • Keyboard navigation: We build interactive elements so they can be reached and operated with a keyboard
  • Focus indicators: Visible focus states help users know where they are on the page when navigating with a keyboard
  • Color contrast: We work to keep sufficient color contrast between text and backgrounds
  • Alternative text: We provide descriptive alternative text for images wherever we can
  • Responsive design: Our website adapts to different screen sizes and zoom levels
  • Form labels: We give form fields associated labels and clear error messages

Testing and Evaluation

  • We check our work with automated accessibility tools
  • We navigate the site with a keyboard to catch problems
  • We review color contrast and text sizing as we build
  • We look at new features for accessibility problems before they ship
  • We rely on your reports to catch what we miss, and we read every one

Ongoing Improvements

  • We treat accessibility as part of how we build, not an afterthought
  • We respond to accessibility feedback and fix what we can
  • We periodically review and update our accessibility practices

Assistive Technology Compatibility

We aim for compatibility with common assistive technologies, including screen readers, screen magnification, speech recognition software, keyboard-only navigation, and browser zoom and text resizing. We cannot test every combination of browser, device, and assistive technology, so if something does not work with yours, please tell us.

Our website is designed to work with recent versions of major browsers including Chrome, Firefox, Safari, and Edge.

Known Limitations

Despite our best efforts to ensure accessibility, there may be some limitations. Below is a description of known limitations and potential solutions:

  • User-uploaded images: Some images uploaded by business owners may lack alternative text. We encourage business owners to provide descriptions for their images, and we are working on solutions to improve this.
  • Third-party content: Some embedded content from third parties (such as maps) may not be fully accessible. We provide alternative ways to access essential information when possible.
  • PDF documents: Some PDF documents may not be fully accessible. If you need information from a PDF in an alternative format, please contact us.
  • Legacy content: Some older content may not meet current accessibility standards. We are working to update this content.

We are continuously working to identify and address these limitations.

Browser and Device Support

For the best accessible experience, we recommend:

  • Using the latest version of your preferred web browser
  • Enabling JavaScript for full functionality
  • Using zoom or text-resizing features as needed
  • Updating your assistive technology to the latest version
