Fire Tower Anniversary Celebration and Tower Climb
Starts Sat, Oct 17, 10:30 AM · Free · Ages 6 and up

About the class
This two part program marks the anniversary of the William Penn Memorial Fire Tower. Part one takes place at the Southeast Branch, where local Skyline historians Corrie Crupi and Mike Reinert talk about the early history of the Works Progress Administration property. Librarian Ryan Yanchocik then shares materials from the library's Works Progress Administration and Civilian Conservation Corps collections, including Mount Penn images from the publications. The morning at the library wraps up with the launch of the new Fire Tower website, and refreshments are provided.
Part two moves to the summit at the fire tower. You can tour the tower, climb to the top for a 60 mile view, and walk the WPA and CCC built grounds, including the remains of the Gravity Railroad and the Summit House hotel, with narration by Corrie and Mike. There is a question and answer session on the grounds as you explore. Vintage souvenir items are sold at the tower.
The program is for ages 6 and up. Parking and seating are limited, so register ahead through the Eventbrite link. Dress for walking outdoors and for stair climbing if you plan to go up the tower.
