A cutting cake is a small decorated cake for the cake-cutting, with sheet cakes behind it, and a sheet cake is a flat rectangular cake that gets cut in the kitchen. It's the standard way to feed a crowd for less.

What does the small cake run? At The Baker's Touch, a two-tier cake of 8 inches over 6 is $175 and feeds 30 to 35. Dice's Creative Cakes in Boyertown prints a standard-decorated full sheet that serves 80 to 100 at $149.50.

For 100 guests that route is the $175 cutting cake plus a $149.50 full sheet, about $325 before delivery, against $475 and up for one tiered cake near that size. Sam's Club, which has a club in Temple, lists a custom full sheet cake that serves 72 to 96 at $42.94 online.

What cupcakes or a dessert table cost instead of a cake.

Maybe you'd rather skip the tiers altogether. Cupcakes are priced by the dozen or by the piece: The Baker's Touch prints $24 a dozen for plain vanilla or chocolate, Ady $45 a dozen standard, and Nae Nae's $3 each.

Nae Nae's takes a 50 percent non-refundable deposit on orders over $50, and Kristin's takes a $100 non-refundable deposit that counts toward the bill, with the rest due 14 days before the wedding. Does the venue charge a cutting fee or allow an outside cake?
