Pocono Whitewater Rafting runs guided raft trips on the Lehigh River from its base on Route 903 in Jim Thorpe, PA. Dam Release trips cover 12 miles of Class II and III rapids; Family Style trips cover 8 easier miles.
On scheduled dam release days the Francis E. Walter Dam raises the Lehigh, and the 12 mile trip through the Lehigh Gorge runs 17 sets of Class II and III rapids over 4 to 5 hours, open to ages 8 and up. The 8 mile Family Style trip takes ages 4 and up through Class I and II water in 3 to 4 hours, with a riverside BBQ lunch in summer. Guides, gear, shuttles, free parking and a post trip bonfire are included.
Before you go
Book ahead by phone (1-800-944-8392) or online. Wear shoes that stay on (old sneakers or water shoes, no flip flops or bare feet) and bring a towel and dry clothes. Lunch is not included on Dam Release trips; sub lunches can be pre-ordered. Minors must raft with a parent or guardian.
