About the event
Genesius Theatre brings the Balderston and Deane stage adaptation of Dracula to its Reading stage. Commissioned by Bram Stoker's widow, Florence Stoker, this version was the first adaptation of the novel authorized by the estate, and it is the one that made Bela Lugosi a name on the American stage before the story moved to the screen.
The action unfolds in the 1920s, moving between the London home of Dr. Seward and the Count's own crypt. Jonathan Harker is searching for the cause of the strange illness troubling his beloved Lucy. Her father calls in the eccentric Abraham Van Helsing just as the mysterious neighbor Count Dracula begins offering help of his own, and the question of whose intentions can be trusted takes hold.
Genesius presents this parlor horror as a celebration of classic literature, the stage, film, and everything that goes bump in the night. It makes for a fitting night out in downtown Reading as the season turns toward Halloween.
